A salad Nicoise is more commonly referred to as a Nicoise salad with the Nicoise being pronounced as “ni-suaz”. This particular salad originates from the Nice region of France and consists of a number of different ingredients the details of which we provide below. However there are some restaurants which although offer a Salad Nicoise it is not what would be considered to be the classic version. Often they will include rice, potatoes, pasta, cheese or cooked vegetables into their recipe.

The real beauty of this particular salad over many others you may have tried is in the way that it is presented. It is not only full of color and texture but flavor as well because of the ingredients that are used. Below we now provide you with details of the ingredients along with the steps that you will need to take in order to produce a great tasting and looking Nicoise Salad.

The ingredients you will need in order to make a Salad Nicoise to serve four people are as follows:- 1. 10 large and ripe tomatoes 2. 1 clove of garlic 3. 1 large cucumber 4. 1 green and one red pepper 5. 6 spring onions 6. 12 anchovy fillets which are in olive oil 7. 125g of black olives 8. 4 eggs that have been hard boiled 9. 90ml of olive oil (extra virgin is best) 10. 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar 11. Juice of one lemon 12. Assorted salad leaves (cos, rocket etc) plus a small amount of fresh Basil. Now let us go through the steps you will need to take in order to make your Salad Nicoise.

Step 1 - You should take the tomatoes and cut them into six pieces each and then put this on a dish before sprinkling with a little salt. Doing this will help to remove some of the excess juices in the tomatoes which could cause the salad to become soggy and limp. Whilst you are preparing the tomatoes it is good idea to also get the eggs ready. In order to get good hard boiled eggs you should aim to leave them in the boiling water for around 5 minutes.

Step 2 - You need to take the cucumber and cut it along the length and then scoop out as many of the seeds as you can with a spoon. Now you next need to cut the cucumber, which has not been peeled into slices, but you should not make them to thin. After slicing up the cucumber, you next need to then finely slice both the peppers along with the spring onions.

Step 3 - Now you need to take the garlic clove and remove the out skin and then cut it in half. Take the two halves of the garlic clove and rub them around the inside of the bowl or bowls into which the salad is going to be placed. Preferably use bowls which are made from wood as they are better able to hold the flavor and scent of the garlic.

Step 4 - Now you have prepared the bowl for serving the salad in you can start to place the ingredients into it. Firstly get the salad leaves which you have chosen (and which have been washed thoroughly) and lay these in the base of the bowl or bowls. Now on top of these you layer the tomatoes which have been previously cut in to sixths and allowed to drain. Then on top of these you place the hard boiled eggs which need to be cut into quarters. After the eggs you then add the sliced peppers, spring onions and cucumber before finally laying on top the anchovy fillets. Then finally you scatter the olives over the top.

Step 5 - Finally, to finish off your Salad Nicoise you need to make the dressing. To do this you take the olive oil, the red wine vinegar, lemon juice and mix these together. Also season the dressing with some salt and freshly ground black pepper. Then just gently drizzle this over the salad before you finally scatter of the top the basil leaves, which have been roughly torn up. Now all you have to do is sit down and enjoy what you have prepared.

Salad Ingredients - What Can I Use?

For a person to be able to make the perfect salad it is important that they know as much as possible about the kinds of ingredients that can be used in them. Often a salad will combine a number of different foods all of which provide a certain taste or texture to the recipe but which also complement each other. In this article we take a look at some of the kinds of salad ingredients that you may want to consider using and which are used the world over.

1. Lettuce & Green Leaved Plants - Often the most common variety of lettuce that people use to make a salad quickly is the iceberg variety. But there are plenty of others you may want to try which will add a completely different taste and texture to your salad. For instance why not try a butterhead lettuce which is very tender tasting one or the cos lettuce whose leaves are much coarser in texture.

For those of you who are fed up or bored with lettuce in your salad there are plenty of other alternatives to choose from. You could try a plant that was originally grown in Italy known as Arugula and which will offer a much more tangy, mild peppery taste to the flavor of your salad. Otherwise another alternative to replace lettuce in your salad is a plant from Asia which has a slightly bitter taste but is often used in cooking by the Chinese called Bok Choy.

2. Fruit & vegetables - Do not restrict yourself to using the more conventional types of fruits and vegetables that people often include in their salads. Rather than going for tomatoes why not try something a little more unusual say add in sliced up apple or oranges. Also for those who want to try a recipe that incorporates Bok Choy which we mentioned previously then slice some of it up place in a bowl and add to it some bean sprouts, sliced cucumber and green onions. Then to finally finish this salad off drizzle over a salad vinaigrette dressing made using soy sauce and sesame seed oil.

Other fruits and vegetables that you may want to include in your salad in place of tomatoes, cucumber and green onions are broccoli, beans (red, black, green or kidney ones) and carrots. Also, you can further add more flavor to your salads through the use of herbs and spices including not just garlic, but basil, rosemary and cilantro.

3. Meat and fish - A salad does not need to be purely made up of fruit and vegetables but can also be used in combination with other ingredients as well. One famous that is world renowned and uses meat (chicken) as a main ingredient in it is Caesar’s salad. But if you are looking to use such ingredients in your salad then ensure that you do not use too much and where meat is concerned you use the leanest pieces possible.

But if you are someone who does not like to eat meat or fish but is not a vegan then you can replace this with cheese instead in order to provide you with the protein your body needs. Plus a great way of adding additional texture to a salad where you are just using salad ingredients or cheese is to add some croutons or nuts to it. Both will add an additional crunchy texture to the meal and provide essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins that your body needs. The best types of nuts to use in a salad are walnuts, peanuts and almonds.

When looking for the right salad ingredients for your salad it is vital that you go for the freshest ones possible. Avoid any kind of vegetable or fruit, which has markings on them or where the leaves have begun to wilt. Plus it is important before you place these ingredients together you thoroughly wash them although some come ready to use and in packaging they will have additives and chemicals on them which help to preserve them.

How To Select The Right Salad Ingredients

For a person to be able to make the perfect salad it is important that they know as much as possible about the kinds of ingredients that can be used in them. Often a salad will combine a number of different foods all of which provide a certain taste or texture to the recipe but which also complement each other. In this article we take a look at some of the kinds of salad ingredients that you may want to consider using and which are used the world over.

1. Lettuce and Greens - Today you do not have to stick to the normal types of lettuce such as iceberg for producing the perfect salad instead why not try a few different alternatives. For example, you could use a butterhead lettuce, which comes with very tender leaves or a cos lettuce, which has a very coarse texture to it, but both will add a completely different texture dimension to the salad you are making.

Although if you would like to try something completely different when it comes to making a salad then avoid using lettuce altogether. Instead why not try something like Augula which originally comes from Italy and comes with a very tangy but mildly peppery taste to it. Or if you want to produce something a little more exotic which has asian connotations to it try adding Bok Choy. Although slightly bitter in taste a squeeze of fresh lemon juice often helps to counteract this.

2. Fruit & vegetables - Instead of sticking with the more traditional fruits and vegetables in your salads why not try to be a little more adventurous. apples are certainly ideal and can easily combine with a number of different other salad ingredients also. If you are looking to make a more unusual salad which incorporates the Bok Choy we mentioned above previously why not mix this up with some bean sprouts, cucumber and spring onions and then drizzle with a light coating of sesame seed oil which you have mixed with some soy sauce.

As well as replacing your usual salad ingredients with more unusual and exotic ones such as brocolli, carrots, beans and Bok Choy you should also include a few herbs into the recipe as well. Adding the likes of rosemary, garlic, cilantro or basil will further enhance the flavors of the ingredients you are already using.

3. Meat and fish - Although most people commonly think that a good salad should solely consist of just vegetables this is not the case. In fact, some of the world’s best-known salads such as Caesar’s have chicken, meat or fish in them. But it is best that you do not go over board on the amount of meat or fish you include.

But if you are someone who does not like to eat meat or fish but is not a vegan then you can replace this with cheese instead in order to provide you with the protein your body needs. Plus a great way of adding additional texture to a salad where you are just using salad ingredients or cheese is to add some croutons or nuts to it. Some Ways To Make A Salad Vinaigrette Dressing

Thursday 3 April 2008 @ 8:04 am
by Kerris Samson

If you happen to be someone that does enjoy a good salad, but find them a little bland without some kind of dressing, instead of buying a ready made one, why not try and make your own. Below we offer you a number of different very simple ways along with a basic recipe for your to make your own salad vinaigrette dressing in a matter of minutes.

In order for you to make a very basic vinaigrette dressing for a salad you can use a whisk, jar, blender or food processor to mix all of the ingredients together. Often the most simple of dressings for a salad will consist of 1 part vinegar, 2 parts oil and some herbs and spices.

If you want to make a very quick vinaigrette to go with a salad then the best way to do this is by using a blender or food processor. Once you have the ingredients together, first pour the vinegar (1 part) into the machine and then to this add spices and herbs to taste and blend together well. Next whilst the machine is still running you begin to slowly pour in the oil (2 parts) until it has all gone and the mixture has been combined together.

As for using a whisk again first place the vinegar in the bowl with the herbs and spices and then very gently begin to whisk them together. Do not whisk too vigorously but as soon as you feel that this have been blended together well you can now very slowly start to add the oil. Initially add the oil a tablespoon at the time then once half of it has been added you can then begin to add the rest in 2 or 3 tablespoons at the time. Remember you should continue whisking all the time. So you will probably find it much each to make a salad vinaigrette using an electric rather than manual whisk.

The simplest and easiest way for making a vinaigrette dressing which will mean far less washing up for you is by using a jar (with a screw on lid). Take your jar and into this pour the vinegar and add the herbs or spices (or both) and then replace the lid. Once the lid has been screwed on tight you need to shake the jar vigorously to make sure that all the ingredients have been mixed together. Once this has been done you now need to start slowly adding the oil. It is best if you do this 2 to 3 tablespoons at a time, and every time you add some oil replace the lid and then again vigorously shake the jar. Remember to make sure the lid is on tight or else you could end up with vinaigrette everywhere.

For you to make a very basic vinaigrette dressing for a salad next time you are having one you will need to get the following ingredients together.

1. 1 Cup Olive Oil (Extra Virgin is best for this kind of dressing) 2. 1/2 Cup Balsamic Vinegar (But you could try others such as white wine or cider) 3. Three cloves of garlic (which has to be pressed) 4. Oregano (1 tspn) - Go for fresh rather than dried if you can 5. Rosemary (1/4 tspn) - Again better to go for fresh rather than dried.

As soon as you have all the ingredients together then you just need to use one of the methods mentioned above to help combine them all together. In a lot of cases you will have a flavorsome salad vinaigrette dressing in a matter of minutes and as long as it is kept in a sealed jar and in the refrigerator will last for as long as two weeks after being made.
