Novelty Buttons: The Magic Of Self-expression
by Alexa Ferotina
The new fashion comeback kid this year has to be novelty buttons. I remember as a kid buying novelty buttons (usually with funny slogans) but today’s buttons are more likely to have theme cartoons or graphics that go with the clothing on which it is pinned.
As I grew a bit older from childhood, I decided I was a hippie by the time I reached my teens. I was way too original to have to wear some kind of decor to express myself. So I didn’t.
I believe The Beatles and other British originals influenced us a great deal which led us to believe we were being original by growing our hair long or braided, and the gratuitous ragged peace sign tshirt was usually the main attire.
I am not saying that we did not have some originality. We were, to my knowledge, the first young generation to stand up and question authority, which was, no doubt, fueled by a combination of chemical experimentation and the quagmire we found ourselves in in Viet Nam. Today, I can wear a novelty button of my choice and make a fun theme out of my day, in a way like visiting Disneyworld. It often sets the topic of conversation wherever I am, especially if I’m wearing a matching tshirt and cap.
Life has changed so dramatically from when I was young. We live in a world where it is very easy to lose one’s voice. We are constantly re-inventing ourselves. We can make that process easier, oddly enough, with a button. I have a collection of about forty and about 20 or so matching tshirts and caps. A lot of people tell me they get up in the morning just to see what my combination will be.
I wonder if I am just an isolated incident or if everyone gets asked “Do you have a web address?” I get asked it five times more than if I have a street address. I guess people expect to see me dressed in my tee/button, cap combination, which, as I write this, seems like a very good idea. A button of the week club, or something silly like that. Hey, it’s healthy and its expressing oneself!
The virtual world is fine, and a great place to do supplementary expression and communication. But in the real world, we still need to communicate and express. Some days I do it with words, and other days with my deadly buttons and tees. I enjoy the button days, to be honest better. They just seem to ride more smoothly attracting interesting people.
I generally buy my buttons and matching attire at RickLondonCollection.Com because they have the funniest variety and best service on the Internet. They also have the theme cartoon buttons which I adore, whether it be dogs, medicine, computers or sports. I collect them all.
There are a million ways to express oneself but the most fun way is with novelty cartoon buttons and matching tshirts and caps Funny Buttons
